Geology

Geology:
Marrakech occupies the southern margin of the Haouz Plain, a vast Cenozoic-to-Quaternary intramontane alluvial depression nestled between the northern limestone slopes of the High Atlas and the arid Paleozoic Jbilet hills. The geological substrate consists of thick layers of alluvial silt, gravel conglomerates, and clay deposits washed down from the High Atlas by the Tensift river system. Centuries of local earthen architecture utilize these iron-rich alluvial clays and pink-red sandstones to fashion the iconic red rammed earth (tabia) ramparts and monuments that define the city's skyline.

Natural History & Hydrology:
Despite a semi-arid steppe climate, medieval engineers turned the plain fertile through an ingenious network of underground subterranean gravity channels (khettaras), which channeled snowmelt aquifers directly from the High Atlas foothills into the historic 1,000-hectare Palmeraie date grove, Agdal reservoirs, and Menara olive basins. The oasis microclimate supports olive groves, bitter orange orchards, cypresses, and serves as an important wintering sanctuary for migratory European raptors, storks, and desert songbirds.
