Geology

Geology:
Aït Benhaddou rests against a dramatic red-clay hillock overlooking the alluvial flood basin of the Ounila River (Asif Ounila) on the southern slopes of the High Atlas Mountains. The underlying stratigraphy comprises Cretaceous red siltstones, continental marls, and gypsum-banded sandstone terraces. The surrounding terrain displays acute arid badland topography sculpted by seasonal torrential flash floods, wind abrasion, and temperature fluctuations that weather the exposed sediment banks.

Natural History & Architecture:
The architectural fabric is constructed entirely of raw local geo-materials using traditional rammed earth (pisé), sun-dried mud bricks, and straw clay plaster that naturally regulate interior temperatures against desert thermal extremes. The riparian Ounila corridor sustains date palm groves, almond orchards, and tamarisks amidst hyper-arid rocky hamada plains, providing crucial resting habitats for migratory trans-Saharan birds, desert larks, and small reptiles like the Berber skink.
